This research proposes to explore how racism endured by girls during their school years impacts the identity formation of elder black women. Additionally, it aims to acknowledge and honor the intellectual contributions of these women, whose knowledge has historically been marginalized. The theoretical framework of the study delves into the construction of identities among elder black women – their attributes, subjectivities, and strategies for overcoming suppression – as well as the role of black individuals in the history of Brazilian education. Methodologically, the study employs a qualitative approach and narrative analysis based on interviews conducted with elder black women. Through their narratives, participants recount experiences of racism within the school environment, feelings of shyness and suppression, efforts to integrate into formal education, and alignment with the nation-building projects endorsed by schools. Furthermore, research participants discuss themes such as religiosity, literacy challenges, marriage, and other aspects that shape the lives of black women in the Brazilian context. Drawing on the research findings, we advocate for anti-racist educational practices that eradicate behaviors resulting in the suppression and stigmatization of black children. The objective is to ensure that the school memories of future generations of black children are rooted not in trauma, but in positive experiences.en
