dc.description.abstractn recent years, the increase in extreme weather events has become increasingly evident, largely caused by human activity. The global concern about the unchecked consumption of fossil fuels has led to the integration of sustainability concepts in various areas, including in the routine of the population and industrial processes. Heating and cooling processes for air and water account for approximately 49% of the total energy consumption of buildings worldwide. To reduce this thermal load, there are passive ventilation and cooling methods, such as the solar chimney and the earth-air heat exchanger (EAHE), which can be combined to amplify their individual benefits. This study aimed to analyze the viability of combining a 2-meter deep EAHE and a 1.6-meter tall solar chimney system as a sustainable alternative to reduce energy costs associated with cooling/heating. The potential for soil cooling in North Dakota, USA, was evaluated due to the soil monitoring history for agriculture and the ease of obtaining historical data. Based on this information, the solar chimney and EAHE system were dimensioned and specified, and their operation was simulated using data collected from meteorological stations in North Dakota. The analysis of the results included the mass flow rate of air induced by the solar chimney, the air temperature at the heat exchanger outlet, which could be used for total or partial cooling depending on the housing characteristics, and the thermal capacity of the soil for cooling or heating the air. To evaluate the energy consumption reduction in cooling and heating, the thermal load from the interaction between the climate and the dwelling was also simulated and the thermal load that the chimney could add to or remove from the system was calculated. The necessary climatic conditions for the system’s operation were identified, and it demonstrated a noteworthy reduction in energy consumption. This reduction was observed in 50% of cases during winter and in 66% of cases during summer. This improvement led to an energy consumption decrease ranging from 25% to 50%.In summary, this study presents a sustainable solution to reduce energy consumption in building cooling processes by combining passive cooling techniques such as the solar chimney and EAHE and using the thermal capacity of the soil.en
