This paper aims to carry out a literary analysis of the historical novel Água de Barrela by Eliane Alves Cruz, examining how the Black female body, stripped of its rights and humanity within Brazilian society through the processes of enslavement and post-colonization, is traversed and represented by the female characters in the work. To carry out this analysis, among the eleven emblematic characters that move between reality and fiction, those whose bodies were affected by the dialogical relationship marked by the time they lived in, and the symbolism of their bodies violated by racial stigma will be analyzed. Assuming that thinking about the conception of the body is to materialize the individual in the world in its historical, social, and biological construction, it is impossible to separate the polysemic meaning that the term itself carries. Its conception goes beyond biological issues; it is marked by social, cultural, religious beliefs, and family convictions that allow us to understand the structure of society. This social system attributes characteristics to the body that can vary according to the group, class, gender, or race in which it is embedded. Thus, the body is a social concept. The characters in the work not only navigate through this definition but also transcend it through their experiences and knowledge. Therefore, this paper seeks to reflect on how a literary work can be a significant tool in removing these women from counterproductive representations that have tied them to a utilitarian and stereotypical concept related to procreation, erotization, and objectification stemming from the meaning attributed to their bodies. This process destabilizes the hegemonic epistemological canon established in the Brazilian literary scene.en
