In recent years, due to the popularity of cryptocurrencies, blockchain technology has become very trendy and penetrated different domains. Since cryptocurrencies recently introduced blockchain technology, the characteristics of applications exist to extend this technology to a nonfinancial use case. One field of research where blockchain has tremendous potential of impact is healthcare, due to the need for a more patient-centric approach to healthcare systems. In addition, combined with other emerging technologies, such as Internet of Things (IoT) or Cloud of Sensor (CoS), where related security threats include data integrity, data freshness, availability of the network, data authentication, secure management, dependability, secure localization, accountability, and flexibility, it is possible to use blockchain to connect disparate systems and increase the accuracy of electronic healthcare records (EHRs), electronic medical records (EMR) and personal health records (PHR). The blockchain technology enables a decentralized and distributed environment with no need for a central authority or trusted third party (TTP). In blockchain, transactions are simultaneously secure and trustworthy due to the use of cryptographic principles. This systematic review of the ongoing research in the applications of blockchain technology in healthcare aims to reveal the potential usage of blockchain technology, combined with clouds of sensors, and to highlight the challenges and possible research directions. The methodology of this research comprises the preferred reporting items for systematic reviews and meta-analysis (PRISMA) guidelines. According to the definition of relevant keywords and the execution of a well-designed research protocol, publications relevant to the topic were identified, using the scientific databases Scopus and Web of Science. After a bibliometric analysis of the articles, it was possible to identify the relevance of the topic and the possible applications in the healthcare sector.en
