Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) have been used in diverse applications due to their flexibility for maneuvering and performing tasks with short path lengths and maximum roll angles. One of the main goals of the oil and gas industry is to improve the exploration process without losing manufacturing efficiency and quality. One of the challenges is maintaining flight stability when facing disturbances, such as wind. UAVs usually use a classical Proportional, Integrative, and Derivative (PID) controller. PID controller is widely used in literature and industry due to its simple structure and less dependence on the model. However, this classical controller requires expertise from the operator to adjust the parameters when dealing with nonlinearities. Therefore, this work proposes developing and implementing an SMC controller aboard a PX4 Flight flight control unit (FCU) software for UAV and a computer vision technique to apply an autonomous UAV in an offshore cargo task for the Oil and Gas sector. The controller was evaluated in both a realistic simulation environment and with real-world tests. The results demonstrated the robustness of the proposed control strategy for marine small cargo transportation using UAVs.en
