The present study reflects on the possibility of constructing Black identities based on Brazilian popular dances. Its starting point is the life story of the author of the text, which narrates her “Becoming Black”, based on her experience with dance, and a dialogue with Rodrigo Nunes, musician, dancer and co-founder of Companhia de Aruanda. Taking as its initial scenario the popular dance circles that take place in the streets of Rio de Janeiro, organized by different groups, the research focuses on Companhia de Aruanda whose headquarters are located in the Madureira neighborhood. Based on the author's experience, her participant observation of the collective's actions, especially Fuzuê de Aruanda, its monthly dance circle, an interview with Rodrigo Nunes and exchanges with different people who inhabit this space, this dissertation proposes discussions of Black identity and the place of ancestry in the recognition and appropriation of popular knowledge; it focuses on Madureira as a territory strongly representative of Black culture and suggests popular culture as a decolonial tool based on music and dance.en
