Resumo

An analytical/experimental approach is proposed to verify the effect of residual stresses on the fatigue performance of flexible riser wires. It was initially assumed that the specimens taken from the manufacturer's wire spools came without appreciable residual stresses. In phase 1 of the study, the distribution of residual stresses due to bending is developed in the specimens by imposing a monotonic transverse displacement of a former, followed by spring back. In phase 2, with the specimens from phase 1, with the curvature downwards, supported on rollers of a 3-point bending clamp, they are subjected to timevariable loading until fatigue failure. The experimental results in the number of cycles spent until failure, Nexp, were significantly higher than those predicted by the analytical model only with the tensile residual stresses generated by bending in the soffit. It is concluded that the compressive residual stresses on the external surfaces of the specimens, due to the final cold rolling process, were responsible for this discrepancy. Making the difference between the equivalent alternating stresses of two possible hypotheses, σa_eq (increase in material resistance) and σa*_eq (decrease in acting stresses) can produce an estimate of the value of the superficial compressive residual stresses previously existing. In summary, residual stresses altered the fatigue performance of specimens quite significantly. In the case analyzed, the previous compressive residual stresses increased the life of specimens subjected to tensile residual stresses due to bending in the soffit substantively.
