Multimaterial additive manufacturing (MMAM) has emerged as a promising alternative for producing components with enhanced mechanical properties. Polylactic Acid (PLA) is widely valued for its ease of printing and biodegradability, although it is susceptible to degradation in harsh environments. Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene (ABS), on the other hand, offers greater mechanical and thermal resistance, making it more suitable for applications requiring higher durability, despite presenting greater challenges during printing due to its shrinkage and sensitivity to temperature variations. This study investigates the use of PLA with ABS protective layers for marine environment applications, aiming to overcome the individual limitations of these materials. While the scientific literature includes several studies on polymer ageing, most tests involve controlled laboratory conditions with accelerated ageing through temperature. In this study, however, the ageing process was conducted in the actual locations of the Brazilian Navy project, faithfully replicating environmental conditions. The proposal is to explore the hybridization between PLA and ABS, using a sandwich structure where PLA serves as the core and ABS as the outer protective layer. Tensile, flexural, and interlaminar shear tests, as well as thermal characterization, were performed to evaluate the performance of the components before and after ageing. The results indicated that the ABS coating provides greater resistance to degradation in the marine environment, extending the lifespan of components manufactured through 3D printing. This approach proves to be a viable and efficient alternative to improve the durability of printed parts, contributing to the advancement of additive manufacturing applications in sectors such as the naval industry.en
