Biodiversity is one of the topics mentioned in the environmental discussions, and its preservation and/or conservation are essential for the balance of the biosphere. In different contexts, several languages can be used to address this theme. However, in this work we dedicate ourselves to the reflection on the biodiversity through the imagetic language and its relation with the verbal text in printed didactic materials destined to the age group corresponding to the Elementary School. Admitting that the school environment acts in the social and political formation of the student, being able to stimulate a critical and participative action in the society, we believe that the approach of content through images can contribute to the understanding of complex issues such as socio-environmental, in a didactic way and with contextualized discussions, where students can question their reality, taking a critical stance on the preservation and conservation of biodiversity. In addition, concern for the preservation of the diversity of life has led us to look upon how traditional groups, such as indigenous people, treat the environment, because it seems to us that they have a lot to teach us about a balanced way of using the resources that nature can offer. Our general objective is to analyze how biodiversity can be addressed through images in printed teaching materials intended for non-indigenous and indigenous students. These analyzed materials are composed of textbooks from a collection approved by the National Didactic Book Program (PNLD) and by a paradidactic book aimed at environmental education for the indigenous land inhabited by the Terena people. Thus, this research presents as specific objectives: to analyze the images present in the two materials; to analyze the relations between image and verbal text in the materials and the representations about biodiversity; and, analyze the differentiation between the scientific discourse built by school science on biodiversity and the narrative of knowledge presented in the material that takes into account the Terena culture. For this, we used theoretical contributions from Semiotics that allowed us to perceive, among other aspects, differences in materials regarding the relationship of the human being with other living beings present in the environment. The relations between verbal text and image observed in the analysis seemed to indicate in the indigenous material a way of looking at the human being as an element of nature that relates to other beings, dialoguing with the reader when presenting the information on the content addressed. The recognition of humanity as an integral, active and active part of nature can also be one of the initial ways to approach biodiversity through images. In this way, this research brings reflections on the approach of biodiversity from two different cosmovisions, in order to allow a reflection for the area of Science Teaching that helps us build future dialogues between the two cultures.en
