| dc.description.abstract | The present work aims to propose an analytical model, based on Solid Mechanics, that can estimate the division of loads between four porcine knee ligaments: the Lateral Collateral Ligament (LCL), the Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL), the Posterior Cruciate Ligament (PCL) and the Medial Collateral Ligament (MCL). In the initial model, ligaments are treated as elastic and linear springs, loaded vertically. The calculation of stiffness, necessary to implement the initial analytical model, is a function of length, cross-sectional area, and modulus of elasticity of each ligament. The theory of small deformations is used, and it is assumed that the material has elastic behavior. In this initial model, the knee ligaments were all included in one plane. In a later development, the knee ligaments are positioned in space, to follow the insertion points on the bones, the inclinations, and the sizes of ligaments found in anatomy treatises. In a further refinement, the vertical loading was adapted to imposed vertical displacement, and viscoelasticity was added to the initial purely elastic behavior, to approximate the mechanical performance of ligaments, classified in the medical literature as soft tissues. To include the viscous part in the proposed analytical model, experimental relaxation tests on the four types of porcine knee ligaments were used, within the quasi-linear viscoelastic approach proposed by Fung. The choice of ligaments removed from porcine knees to carry out the experimental part, used in this dissertation, was due to the great anatomical similarity of these ligaments with the ligaments of human knees. With the increase in complexity of the analytical model, it became necessary to use a programming language, such as C Sharp, to solve the generated system of equations. Initial results show that the division of loads between knee ligaments was not as affected by the action of their viscous component. The decrease in the capacity of porcine knee ligaments to resist loads reached values of the order of half of their original capacities. An additional result was the generation of the constants of Fung's approach, necessary for implementing this and new developments of analytical models that require the viscoelastic behavior description of porcine knee ligaments. Finally, it is expected that health professionals will be able to benefit from the extrapolation of these results. That helps an orthopedic doctor to carry out better intervention planning or a physiotherapist to improve the treatment of a patient in the postoperative period. | en |
| pt |
