PERFIL SOCIODEMOGRÁFICO E ACADÊMICO-PROFISSIONAL DOS MEMBROS DA ACADEMIA BRASILEIRA DE CIÊNCIAS: UMA ANÁLISE ABRANGENTE

Abstract

Since its founding in 1916, the Brazilian Academy of Sciences (ABC) has played a pivotal role in strengthening research and advancing science in the country. To understand the composition of this institution and assess its representativeness in national science, it is essential to examine the sociodemographic and academic-professional profile of its members. Such analysis enables the identification of how institutional and structural factors influence diversity and inclusion within the scientific community. The main objective of this study is to characterize the profile of ABC members, while the secondary objective is to analyze the effects of inclusion policies on promoting diversity within the academy. The methodology adopted is descriptive, based on a quantitative approach, allowing for the systematization and objective interpretation of the collected data. A total of 951 active members of the ABC were considered, with information obtained from two main sources: the institution's official website (accessed on 08/04/2024) and the Lattes Platform, from which curricula were extracted between November 2024 and February 2025. Data processing and analysis were conducted with the support of the Selenium automation tool, Microsoft Excel 2007 software, and the RStudio statistical environment. As a result of the research, it was observed that the members of the Brazilian Academy of Sciences exhibit a multifunctional profile, supported by high qualifications and institutional prestige. This profile coexists with structural inequalities that continue to restrict access to and circulation within spaces of scientific recognition — a tension that underscores the ongoing challenges between merit and inclusion in the academic field.

Desde sua fundação, em 1916, a Academia Brasileira de Ciências (ABC) tem desempenhado um papel fundamental no fortalecimento da pesquisa e no avanço científico do país. Para compreender a composição dessa instituição e avaliar sua representatividade na ciência nacional, torna-se imprescindível examinar o perfil sociodemográfico e acadêmico-profissional de seus membros. Tal análise possibilita identificar de que maneira fatores institucionais e estruturais influenciam a diversidade e a inclusão no meio científico. O objetivo principal deste estudo é caracterizar o perfil dos membros da ABC, enquanto o objetivo secundário consiste em analisar os efeitos das políticas de inclusão na promoção da diversidade dentro da academia. A metodologia adotada tem caráter descritivo, com base em abordagem quantitativa, permitindo a sistematização e a interpretação objetiva dos dados coletados. Foram considerados 951 membros ativos da ABC, cujas informações foram obtidas em duas fontes principais: o site oficial da instituição (acessado em 04/08/2024) e a Plataforma Lattes, da qual foram extraídos currículos no período de novembro de 2024 a fevereiro de 2025. O tratamento e a análise dos dados foram realizados com o suporte da ferramenta de automação Selenium, do software Microsoft Excel 2007 e do ambiente estatístico RStudio. Como resultado da pesquisa, observou-se que os membros da ABC possuem perfil multifuncional, sustentado por alta qualificação e prestígio institucional, o qual coexiste com desigualdades estruturais que ainda limitam o acesso e a circulação nos espaços de consagração científica — uma tensão que revela os impasses entre mérito e inclusão no campo acadêmico.
