Resumo

The 18th and 19th centuries are remarkable in the advancement of the forms of struggle of black peoples in search of freedom and redemption against colonial-slavery oppression. As a result, both Pan-Africanism and African nationalism developed in the 20th century an articulated set of theoretical frameworks and concepts employed to express positive views about black people and Africa. The Rastafarian movement emerged as a force in the Caribbean that sought to root in its way of life the ideals advocated by Pan-Africanism and African nationalism. This dissertation aims to analyze the theoretical-philosophical and ideological foundations of Pan-Africanism and African nationalism, realizing which concepts and conceptions were most developed in the secular trajectory of the Rastafari movement, structuring its thought, political practices and cultural expressions. It argues and substantiates the importance of the Rastafari movement for a libertarian pan-African and nationalist agenda that remains valid in the 21st century. The Rastafarian contribution to this agenda remains insufficiently recognized in academia and society in general, and this is a gap that this dissertation seeks to fill. Methodologically, the research adopts a transdisciplinary perspective, dialoguing with different fields of African studies.
