Brazilian education still maintains strong foundations in coloniality. The construction of the curriculum, pedagogical practices, and the teaching materials offered in schools still reproduce stereotypes that contribute little to breaking this paradigm. Hegemonic curricular practices exclude Afro-Brazilian knowledge and their ways of existence, which reinforces the oppression and subalternization of marginalized and/or “minority” groups. In this way, this research seeks to highlight how geography education can contribute to combating coloniality present in the hegemonic discourses reproduced in the school’s curricular practices, by providing opportunities and democratizing the ancestral knowledge of the Afro-diasporic people. The objective is to propose pathways for the construction of Afrocentric curricular practices for geography teaching based on the experiences in a public school in Rio de Janeiro. This is qualitative research with a propositional character, as it suggests alternative teaching practices that oppose the hegemonic order, and also points out strategies and forms of intervention to circumvent Eurocentric aspects of the curriculum, supported by a bibliographical survey, documentary reading and educational legislation. As sources of research, authors such as Molefi Asante, Aníbal Quijano, Kabengele Munanga, Nilma Lino Gomes, Frantz Fanon, Rafael dos Anjos, Sueli Carneiro, Geny Guimarães, and Renato Emerson dos Santos are referenced – who discuss issues such as decoloniality, Afrocentricity, Laws 10.639/03 and 11.645/08, pedagogical practices, and the deconstruction of Eurocentric curricula. We are permeated by a hegemonically Eurocentric and colonial education, and we need to undo the misconceptions that have distorted the cultures of African and Afro-Brazilian origin. In this sense, this study rethinks how school geography, from an Afrocentric perspective, can help advance teaching on ethnic-racial issues. To achieve this, it is essential to implement an anti-racist education in order to promote recognition of the history, social, political, cultural, and educational contributions of the Black community in various educational spaces. Therefore, an Afrocentric perspective on school education can broaden the worldview, making it closer to Brazilian reality. We believe that blackening the curricular practices helps break stereotypes and produces other understandings/imaginings about the black populationen
