O INGRESSO DE SENEGALESES E HAITIANOS NO MERCADO DE TRABALHO EM CAXIAS DO SUL (RS): AS INFLUÊNCIAS DO RACISMO NA OCUPAÇÃO DE VAGAS

Abstract

This dissertation aims to investigate the influence of racism on access to the job market for Senegalese and Haitian immigrants in Caxias do Sul, a migratory flow that intensified from 2010 onwards. These immigrants arrive in Brazil expecting better opportunities, however, when faced with a restricted and discriminatory job market, many end up carrying out informal activities, such as street trading, without the labor guarantees and basic rights that formal employment offers. The research analyzes the peculiarities of Brazilian structural racism, seeking to understand how this prejudice maintains structures of domination through the exploitation of labor and accumulation of wealth by the white elite, sustained by social exclusion. In this context, racism affects the lives of these immigrants, influencing their prospects for professional growth and their quality of life, by limiting them to precarious and devalued positions. The dissertation also seeks to understand how prejudice impacts their self-esteem and is internalized by them, creating a cycle of economic and social stagnation. The research explores to what extent this context of discrimination and lack of opportunities drives these immigrants to leave Caxias do Sul in search of a more dignified life in other locations, highlighting the role of racism as a barrier to the inclusion and social mobility of new migrants. As a methodology, the research used a bibliographical review, which supports the understanding of racism and its harmful effects on the lives of victims, the analysis of statistical data from Brazilian research institutes, which point out the differences between whites and blacks in the job market, in addition of semi-structured interviews with Senegalese and Haitian immigrants in Caxias do Sul to understand the impacts of racism and xenophobia on their lives, complemented by the researcher's own observations. The study contributes to the understanding of the dynamics of racism that affect immigrants, in addition to offering a broader view of the challenges that influence their trajectories in Brazil.

A presente dissertação tem como objetivo investigar a influência do racismo no acesso ao mercado de trabalho dos imigrantes senegaleses e haitianos em Caxias do Sul, um fluxo migratório que se intensificou a partir de 2010. Esses imigrantes chegam ao Brasil na expectativa de melhores oportunidades, porém, ao se depararem com um mercado de trabalho restrito e discriminatório, muitos acabam exercendo atividades informais, como o comércio ambulante, sem as garantias trabalhistas e direitos básicos que um emprego formal oferece. A pesquisa analisa as peculiaridades do racismo estrutural brasileiro, buscando compreender como esse preconceito mantém as estruturas de dominação através da exploração da mão de obra e acumulação de riqueza pela elite branca, sustentando-se pela exclusão social. Nesse contexto, o racismo afeta a vida desses imigrantes, influenciando suas perspectivas de crescimento profissional e sua qualidade de vida, ao limitá-los a postos precários e desvalorizados. A dissertação busca, ainda, entender como o preconceito impacta sua autoestima e é por eles internalizado, criando um ciclo de estagnação econômica e social. A pesquisa explora em que medida esse contexto de discriminação e falta de oportunidades impulsiona esses imigrantes a deixarem Caxias do Sul em busca de uma vida mais digna em outras localidades, evidenciando o papel do racismo como uma barreira à inclusão e mobilidade social dos novos migrantes. Como metodologia, a pesquisa utilizou a revisão bibliográfica, que respalda a compreensão do racismo e seus efeitos nocivos na vida das vítimas, a análise de dados estatísticos de institutos de pesquisa brasileiros, que apontam as diferenças entre brancos e negros no mercado de trabalho, além de entrevistas semiestruturadas com imigrantes senegaleses e haitianos em Caxias do Sul para compreender os impactos do racismo e da xenofobia em suas vidas, complementadas pelas observações do próprio pesquisador. O estudo contribui para o entendimento das dinâmicas de racismo que afetam os imigrantes, além de oferecer uma visão mais ampla sobre os desafios que influenciam suas trajetórias no Brasil.
