HISTÓRIA E MEMÓRIA DA UMBANDA: O MITO DE FUNDAÇÃO NA CONSTRUÇÃO DA IDENTIDADE UMBANDISTA

Abstract

Umbanda's founding myth and the figure of Zélio Fernandino de Moraes have been central to debates about the emergence of religion and its whitening process. Criticisms of this centrality question the fact that such a debate focuses on the discourse and literary production of a specific, white, middle-class Umbanda group. This dissertation seeks to broaden the debate and include the orality of the terreiros. After carrying out a reconstruction of the formation of the myth, we start with the distinction between framed memory and underground memory by Michel Pollak to analyze two Umbanda houses. Casa de Samir, a Kardecist center converted into Umbanda and Ilê Asé Yá Togun Benã, home of Candomblé and Umbanda. Through semistructured interviews with the leaders, the leader Maria do Carmo and the ialorixá Carmem de Iemanjá, the acceptance of such a myth and the figure of Zélio Fernandino is analyzed, trying to understand the elements that allow the success of the work of framing the memory and its limits.

O mito de fundação da Umbanda e a figura de Zélio Fernandino de Moraes têm sido centrais nos debates sobre o surgimento da religião e sobre seu processo de branqueamento. As críticas a essa centralidade questionam o fato de tal debate se concentrar no discurso e na produção literária de um grupo umbandista específico, branco e de classe média. Esta dissertação busca ampliar o debate e incluir a oralidade dos terreiros. Após realizar uma reconstrução da formação do mito, parte-se da distinção entre memória enquadrada e memória subterrânea de Michel Pollak para analisar duas casas de Umbanda. A Casa de Samir, centro kardecista convertido em Umbanda, e o Ilê Asé Yá Togun Benã, casa de Candomblé e Umbanda. Por meio de entrevistas semiestruturadas com as lideranças, a dirigente Maria do Carmo e a ialorixá Carmem de Iemanjá, analisa-se a aceitação de tal mito e da figura de Zélio Fernandino, tentando compreender os elementos que permitem o sucesso do trabalho de enquadramento da memória e seus limites.
