In the educational environment, verbal language is emphasized at the expense of visual language throughout schooling. This fact is enhanced when we are in the Deaf scene, where children are constituted by visuality. Are the images used in teaching materials for the Deaf chosen with a view to certain objectives? What are these intentionalities? What are your criteria for choice and use? In view of the multiple research scenarios that Science Teaching can provide, this thesis takes a look at the use of still images - such as, for example, illustrations, figures and photographs - in the teaching materials for science teaching aimed at Deaf students, since that built by teachers from the early years of Elementary Education in the context of Deaf Education, in a bilingual teaching proposal: Brazilian Sign Language (Libras) - Portuguese Language. Thus, based on studies on the didactic function of the image, mediation and semiotic perception and the need for Visual Literacy, we intend to answer the following research question: What is the role of still images in printed teaching materials for science teaching? Natural for Deaf students in the early years of elementary school? Through the analysis of didactic materials and narrative conversations with a listening teacher, author of these materials, who works at the National Institute of Deaf Education, in the education of the Deaf in a bilingual context, we had as a general objective to investigate the purposes with which the images were chosen and used, seeking to scan their didactic and semiotic functions. For this: we study the profile of Deaf teachers and listeners of Elementary Education I at INES, in the Science discipline; we describe, in an analytical way, the teaching materials for Science Teaching built by a Science teacher who listens to the initial grades of INES Elementary School; we discussed the criterion of choice and the use of the images of the materials prepared by this teacher, in view of the didactic and semiotic functions of the images and finally we related the use of fixed image with the teaching of Sciences from the teaching practice reported in her speech . With the analysis, we found that there were no deaf teachers working in science teaching for elementary school I in the researched institution and that most of the images present in the didactic material were images of the type illustrations. We noticed that the still images are used centrally in the didactic proposals of Science Teaching for the Deaf students. We found that knowledge about the importance of Visual Literacy in the education of the Deaf and about the potential and semiotic and didactic functions of the fixed image in teaching materials can foster teaching and learning situations to be built for an applied visuality.en
