This dissertation aims to demonstrate how cartographic production can either highlight or erase information. The period under analysis spans from 2016 to 2023, building upon research initiated during undergraduate studies in Geography, which examined Rio de Janeiro's favelas and cartographic interventions from 2011 to 2013. Maps are representations of specific spatial areas and contribute to the construction of diverse narratives; they are not neutral productions. Maps can shape worldviews and interventions based on the intentions for which the map was created. This is qualitative interpretative research that involves the analysis of maps. The study focuses on the mapping of certain Rio de Janeiro favelas conducted by Google Maps and narratives about the favelas from the perspectives of public authorities, media, and other groups, such as real estate and tourism agents. Self-mapping (automapping) is also part of the study to analyze and discuss the resistance of favela residents regarding omissions in maps. In the first chapter, the interconnection of these spaces and their relationship with resistance in favelas is highlighted. This includes a historical analysis of censuses in Rio de Janeiro's favelas and the influence of media in representing these communities. Additionally, the discourses of municipal, state, and federal representatives regarding favelas are examined. The second chapter provides a brief history of Cartography, exploring the evolution of cartographic techniques and their relationship with intentions. The emphasis is on the significance of maps, particularly in the current context with the emergence of Google Maps and Google Earth. The inherent power of Cartography and the meanings attributed to maps are investigated. The third chapter focuses in a proposal cartographic analysis, specifically examining the representation of Rio de Janeiro's favela territories between 2016 and 2023 through Google Maps and Google Earth. In the fourth chapter, the dissertation analyzes cartographic production and self-mapping as a new approach to interpreting Cartography. The discussion encompasses maps, counter-maps, and other forms of cartographic production, exploring how these representations can influence the understanding of segregated territories, especially in urban favelas. The research contributes to a more comprehensive and critical perspective on the cartographic representation of segregated territories, highlighting the social, historical, and mediarelated complexities involved.en
