| dc.description.abstract | The growing demand for environmentally sustainable materials with a lower carbon footprint and higher recyclability has increased in recent decades. In this context, Natural Fiber Reinforced Composites (NFRCs) have emerged as promising alternatives to traditional materials, offering an eco-friendly solution that can mitigate the carbon footprint and provide good mechanical properties. However, the application of NFRCs remains largely restricted to non-structural components due to the variability in the mechanical properties of natural fibers. An effective strategy to enhance these properties is hybridization, which integrates different fiber types within a single matrix. Thus, this study investigated the effect of interlaminar hybridization with jute and flax fibers, exploring their mechanical properties and their application in bonded joints, aiming to contribute to expanding the use of NFRCs in structural applications. Interlaminar hybrid composites were manufactured via compression molding, with a core of 5 layers of bidimensional jute fabric, symmetrically surrounded by 1, 2, and 3 external layers of unidirectional or twill flax fabric. For comparison, neat jute and neat flax composites, each with 11 layers of fabric, were also prepared. The experimental tests were divided into two stages: the first consisted of mechanical characterization with tensile, flexural, and impact tests, and the second involved the evaluation of failure loads and failure modes in single-lap joints with adherents reinforced with 2 and 3 external layers of flax. The results showed that tensile strength increased significantly with the number of flax layers. The samples reinforced with 3 layers of unidirectional and twill flax exhibited the highest tensile strength, with an increase of approximately 64% and 45%, respectively, compared to the neat jute composite. Flexural strength progressively increased up to the samples with 2 external flax layers, reaching improvements of approximately 58% for the unidirectional configuration and 40% for twill, compared to neat jute. The addition of a third layer did not result in significant gains, indicating a stabilization of performance. Under impact, all hybrid composites exhibited higher impact energy than neat jute. The sample reinforced with 3 layers of unidirectional flax stood out, with 75% more impact energy than neat jute and 11% more than neat unidirectional flax. In the joint performance analysis, failure loads and failure modes were observed to be similar between joints with hybrid jute/flax adherents and those with neat flax adherents. The fabric architectures, such as the twist pattern and fiber orientation, likely influenced these behaviors, contributing to the similarity in failure modes. These results demonstrate the effectiveness of interlaminar hybridization as a promising technique for advancing the use of NFRCs in structural applications. | en |
| pt |
