| dc.description.abstract | Micro-milling is an essential process in high-precision manufacturing, with significant potential for machining miniaturized components made from advanced metallic alloys such as the AA2024 aluminum alloy, widely used in the aerospace industry. Despite its potential, micro-milling remains underutilized in industrial settings due to the inherent challenges of microfabrication, particularly the lack of well-established guidelines for the appropriate selection of cutting parameters. Equations and models developed for conventional machining are not directly applicable at the microscale, as they do not account for specific phenomena at this scale, such as the plowing effect, in which the material is plastically deformed without being effectively removed, compromising surface quality and dimensional accuracy. Furthermore, the literature still lacks systematic experimental data to support the definition of efficient operational parameters in micro-milling. This study investigates the influence of cutting parameters—depth of cut, cutting speed, and feed rate—on surface roughness, burr formation, and cutting forces during the micro-milling of AA2024 alloy, using a 0.8 mm diameter tool coated with Aluminum Titanium Nitride (TiAlN). The research emphasizes the behavior of cutting forces under different operating conditions, with a focus on the plowing effect and its implications for surface integrity. Experimental results showed that increasing the depth of cut from 0.10 mm to 0.15 mm contributed to improved surface roughness, an effect attributed to the reduced predominance of plowing, particularly under conditions where the minimum uncut chip thickness approaches the non-removal threshold. Optical and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analyses revealed the presence of aluminum oxides on the machined microchannel, indicating localized temperature rise associated with excessive plastic deformation. These findings reinforce the importance of careful selection of cutting parameters to minimize surface defects, optimize process efficiency, and enable the production of high-performance miniaturized components that meet the stringent requirements of the aerospace industry. | en |
| pt |
