Considering the wide range of applications of adhesive joints, they can be subject to environments with different conditions of temperature, humidity and exposure to UV (ultraviolet) radiation. Since the mechanical behavior of a joint is strongly influenced by these conditions, understanding its behavior as a function of degradation is important to reduce weight and cost. Despite the efforts already made by several researchers, the long-term effects of UV radiation still need to be better investigated and its action combined with other environmental factors better understood. From this perspective, three experimental studies are proposed considering simple steel/GFRP (glass fiber reinforced polymer) bonded joints with epoxy adhesive, materials of great importance in structural repairs. In a first study, the isolated influence of UV radiation over time was evaluated using an artificial UV exposure chamber. In a second proposal, the changes caused by the action of immersion in distilled and salt water at three temperatures (4, ambient and 40 °C) are investigated, with and without the action of artificial UV radiation before immersion. In the third experimental proposal, the joints are exposed in an external environment over the course of a year. The joints were mechanically characterized by shear testing and other analyzes such as DMA, FTIR and TGA were adopted for the isolated characterization of the joint materials. Compared to joints in an undegraded state, the joints showed average shear strength with maximum reductions of 32.5% when exposed to UV for 90 days and 59.6% when exposed to the external environment for 180 days. Without precedence of UV degradation, the effect of immersion in water was more significant at higher temperatures, when presented with the lowest shear strength. However, when preceded by UV exposure, immersion became less significant in reducing shear strength. In general, changes in failure modes were noted, going from a failure in the composite adherent to an adhesive failure at the interface with the metal after the action of degradation. In addition to mechanical changes, photo-oxidation of the polymers (change in color of the composite), Tg of the adhesive and the presence of micro cracks on the surface of the composites were identified with degradation. From the results obtained, it is evident the importance of carrying out long periods of degradation to better describe the behavior of the joints. Furthermore, exposure to the external environment, even with a lower incidence of UV radiation compared to that artificially produced in the chamber, was more aggressive, especially due to the salt air and humidity. Thus, this work contributed to a study on the mechanical properties of engineering materials in the context of structural repair, subjected to different forms of degradation, addressing points that are little reported or not well understood in the literature.en
