| dc.description.abstract | UNS S39274 is a W-alloyed superduplex stainless steel (SDSS) that has been used in critical services in Oil & Gas Exploration & Production (E & P), such as tubulars in oil country tubular goods (OCTG). In general, SDSSs are applied where corrosion resistance is the most important factor. However, in OCTG, these alloys can be susceptible to sulfide stress cracking (SSC), and pitting corrosions, in deep wells, due to environments with high levels of H2S, CO2, chlorides (Cl-), high pressures and high temperatures (HP/HT), requiring high mechanical and corrosion resistances. These resistances are due the biphasic microstructure formed by ferrite (δ) and austenite (γ) in approximatelly equal proportions. In order to increase mechanical strength, seamless tubes are cold drawn in a costly operation. However, the influence of cold working on the dislocation density in each phase of the SDSS phases is still unclear. The solution heat treatment of these hardened steels with water quenching is usually specified to promote phase balance, and avoid secondary phases, such as sigma (σ), chi (χ), and other deleterious phases; however, even with very fast cooling rates, chromium nitrides (CrN/Cr2N) can precipitate intragranularly in δ. The study of these nitrides and their effects on these steels is still little explored in the specialized literature, and more in-depth analyses, tests and characterizations are required. In this work, samples in as-received cold worked condition (AR-CW); and susbsequently solution treated (ST) at 1050, 1100, and 1150 oC, followed by cooling with water, were evaluated by optical (LOM) and confocal microscopies, scanning and transmission electron microscopies (SEM/TEM), X-ray diffactrion (XRD)); mechanical tests (tensile, impact toughness at -46 oC, microhardness and hardness tests); and corrosion tests (critical pitting temperature (CPT) by potenciostatic polarization; cyclic potentiodynamic polarization tests in 3.5% NaCl solution at 80 oC; double loop electrochemical potentiodynamic (DL-EPR); and slow strain rate tensile tests (SSRTs) in a saline sour solution (pH 3.5) in the presence of H2S and CO2). The presence of nitrides inside the δ-phase of the solution heat treated conditions comparing with the AR-CW was investigated and it was found that these particles precipitated mainly inside the δ grains, but also on the δ/δ and δ/γ boundaries. In addition, in the AR-CW and ST-1150 samples, characterized by TEM, two types of chromium nitrides (larger CrN/Cr2N and nanosized CrN particles) were revealed. The larger nitrides were also observed by SEM and LOM, and the nanometric ones could only be studied by TEM, identifying three variants of nanosized precipitates, and realizing their coherence with the ferritic matrix by respecting the Baker–Nutting Orientation Relationship (OR) with the ferrite (100)CrN ‖ (100)δ−Fe; [110]CrN ‖ [001]δ−Fe. These fine precipitates provoked pinning of dislocations, causing some hardening of the δ-phase. Tensile curves were obtained and modeled by strain hardening models (Hollomon, Ludwik, and Voce), the latter with the highest correlation coefficients. The nitrides amount increased with the solution temperature, but the δ microhardness was not affected by this increase, although some deleterioiseffect on impact toughness at -46 oC was noticed for ST-1150. By XRD, dislocation densities were measured with the Williamson & Smallman model, using the crystallite size and lattice microstrain as input parameters, which were obtained using the Scherrer, Monshi-Scherrer, and Williamson-Hall (W-H) models. The cold work led to smaller crystallite size and greater lattice microstrain. Solution heat treatment reduced the dislocation densities, but increasing this temperature caused dislocation densities to rise. Due to nitrides precipitation, δ-phase was more susceptible to pitting nucleation, and attack than γ-phase, according to polarization and DL-EPR tests. Analyzing the fracture surfaces and secondary cracks developed in the SSRT, under severe conditions, the tested materials were brittle and susceptible to SSC. | en |
| pt |
