Resumo

In this paper, we adopt a theoretical approach that conceives the school environment as a space permeated by sociocultural interactions. These interactions, led by teachers and students, are fundamental for the production and dissemination of elements such as identity, discourse, representation, and action, among others. Representations, as social constructions, constitute forms of knowledge elaborated to apprehend and interact with the world around us. In research conducted during the master's program, it was possible to observe, through the approaches proposed by Social Representations Theory, that elementary school science teachers conceive science teaching as a process primarily aimed at transmitting scientific concepts and applying procedures characteristic of the sciences. Faced with the panorama it became intriguing and motivating to understand how this theme is represented by students in this stage of Basic Education. Our main objective in this research was to investigate the cognitive-structural content of the social representation of the object of science teaching and its intersection with practices of scientific literacy in a protagonist approach, considering its incidence and relevance for students in the final years of Elementary Education. Data was produced through the application of questionnaires containing open-ended questions, as well as items of free word evocation and association tests, directed at one hundred and thirty-five students enrolled in a municipal public school in the State of Espírito Santo. Through the structural approach called the Central Core Theory, we identified the content of the representation, its meanings, and the attitudinal and affective dimensions involved in the representational activity, as well as its connection with practices of scientific literacy from a protagonist perspective. We mapped the configuration of a representational arrangement that highlights the importance of studying science objects, especially the human body, to understand their characteristics and functioning - attributing to the teacher a central role in this process. Favorable attitudes towards the study of sciences reflect the recognition of the applicability of scientific content recorded in the school space. The importance of understanding the representations that students construct about the object of this study, and articulating them with their criteria and meanings, it is related to the fact that such representations give meaning to the actions, discourses, norms, and practices that permeate the school sociocultural context. From this perspective, we direct reflections towards a critical and thoughtful analysis of proposals aimed at scientific literacy in schools, considering curricular guidelines and actions aimed at the training of science teachers.
