Composite materials have been an increasing focus of studies for industrial applications due to their characteristics of high performance and low weight. Natural fibers have similar characteristics, in addition to being renewable and of low environmental impact. However, significant limitations exist in the use of these fibers, especially in conjunction with polymeric matrices. There are some techniques used to reduce the negative impacts of using natural fibers in composites such as hybridization and chemical treatments. Adhesive joints have received great academic and industrial attention, due to their positive characteristics compared to classic joints (screws and welds). In this context, the application of composites in adhesively bonded joints represents an optimal possibility of applying lightweight materials that are less aggressive to the environment as well as cheaper in joints that are easy to manufacture. The main objective of this work was to investigate the effect of the hybridization technique on adhesively bonded joints of composites reinforced with jute/glass fibers in epoxy matrix and an automotive structural adhesive. In addition, a study of the effect of multi-scale hybridization was conducted in relation to the mechanical characteristics of the materials previously used in bonded joints. Bidirectional fabrics of jute and glass fiber were used to manufacture the hybrid interlaminar composites. The hand layup technique was used for manufacturing. The layering sequence was made so that a constant jute core was maintained, while the number of outer glass layers was varied between 2 and 3 on each side. Single lap joints (SLJ) were manufactured for both cases of 2 and 3 layers of exterior glass fiber and tested in traction according to an ASTM standard. There was a significant increase in the failure load of the joint due to the increase in the number of layers of glass without a significant increase in the weight of the adherend. The effect of nature, scale and weight fraction of particulate additive reinforcements on the mechanical properties of the composites was investigated. Two fractions of weight of the additive material (1% and 3%, in relation to resin + hardener) of different types (for example, milled jute, curauá and glass and nano TiO2) were used as particulate reinforcements. Tensile, flexion and impact tests were performed according to ASTM standards. The particles affected the mechanical properties of hybrid composites in different ways. Several trends in the effect of particles on the mechanical properties of composites have been observed due to the interaction between them (i.e., particle scale, content and nature). It has been observed that these factors cannot always be separated. Positive trends were observed in traction for synthetic additives while the opposite was seen for natural ones. In flexion, the effects were negative in all cases. Under impact condition, improvements were observed as a function of increasing content for nano TiO2 particles. The negative trends observed are probably due to the hydrophilic nature of the additive material and its scale.en
