Monological and expository teaching does not provide a satisfactory learning to students and, in addition, cause underdevelopment of educational skills. Alternatively, active methodologies not only promote cognitive learning, but also develop critical thinking, communication and argumentation skills, collaboration, and creativity. In this sense, this research has two main goals: i) quantify the average normalized gains in understanding graphs in kinematics in second year high school students in a federal public school in Rio de Janeiro; ii) analyze qualitative aspects about interactions between peers of two small groups of students during learning activities. For both, the active methodology applied was Peer Instruction (PI), associated with Just-in-Time Teaching (JiTT). The quantitative instrument applied was the Test of Understanding Graphs in Kinematics (TUG-K) and the data collected from TUG-K applications allowed us to answer the first research question: i) is the course average normalized gain with PI associated to JiTT greater than the gain in lectures? The TUG-K validation in the context of this research is also one of the results of this research. About qualitative analyzes, one group with 4 students had their audios collected in 2019 and a small focal group was structured in 2021 during three months of weekly and remote classes. In total, ten interactions between the students were analyzed with the objective of answering three qualitative questions: ii) in which categories of an analytical map of analysis of social interaction formed by discourse moves, logical processes and nature of explanation do the students' audio extracts fit? iii) what is the contribution of each member of the group to the discussion? iv) what are the types of conversations during the interactions? The answers to these questions help to understanding how peer interaction impacts student’s learning. Finally, the fifth and final research question is whether the answers obtained are compatible with publications in the area. The average normalized gains with active classes were 34%, twice as much the 17% obtained in classes without PI. The observations of the qualitative aspects indicate that plural groups of 5 to 6 members, as well as the teacher's performance in the discussion stages, enable a better distribution of interaction among the students. These results are aligned with the references of this research.en
