dc.description.abstract9% Ni low carbon steel is known for its excellent cryogenic toughness and good resistance at -196°C, which makes it widely used in oil and gas industry, particularly in the storage and transportation of liquefied natural gas (LNG).The final mechanical properties of this steel are adjusted by quenching and tempering heat treatments. As the incorrect selection of tempering conditions can cause embrittlement of 9% Ni steel, which has its cryogenic toughness drastically reduced, the impacts of slow cooling (furnace) in tempering of this material were analyzed, as well as the feasibility of identifying temper embrittlement non-destructively through magnetic Barkhausen noise (MBN) inspection. For this, samples of ASTM A333 grade 8 material were prepared, which were quenched and then tempered from different temperatures (350°C, 400°C, 450°C, 500°C, 565°C, 585° C and 605°C) and quickly cooled (water) or slowly (in furnace). These specimens were submitted to magnetic inspection using the MBN technique and the root mean square (RMS) of the MBN signal was calculated. Charpy impact test at -196°C, hardness measurement, fractography and microstructure analysis through Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), and evaluation of the percentage of austenite retained by magnetization technique were also performed. The samples tempered at 350°C, 400°C and 450°C showed very low toughness in the Charpy impact tests at low temperature (- 196°C) due to temper embrittlement. Samples cooled slowly from the tempering temperature (565°C, 585°C and 605°C) also showed reduced toughness compared to samples tempered at the same temperature and rapidly cooled in water. The brittle fracture was characterized by intergranular cracks and cleavage. The root mean square of the MBN signal (RMSMBN) was higher in specimens as quenched and in specimens tempered in the temper embrittlement range (350°C-500°C) than in specimens which were correctly tempered (565°C-605°C and water cooled).Comparing specimens tempered at 565 - 605°C range and slowly cooled with those which were water cooled, the RMSMBN was higher in the former group, except for the tempering temperature at 605°C. RMSMBN could not be related to the hardness of 9% Ni steel.en
