Resumo

Additive manufacturing allows the production of complex geometries, at low cost and multiple types of materials. This process of fabrication has the potencial to be very popular among low-scale production in the naval environment, since it allows a variation of the density of the internal filling, and the manufacturing of products with controlled buoyancy. The aim of this study is to analyze the watertight of specimens fabricated in a Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM) 3D printer, made of polylactic acid (PLA) covered with 3 different types of coatings. The specimens were divided into 4 groups: epoxy-based paint, epoxy resin, polyester resin, and a control group without any coating. All coating were applied in 3 layers. To simulate small flaws in the manufacturing, a 0.5mm diameter hole was made using a micro grinder on one face of each specimen before the application of the coating. Specimens were immersed in fresh water for 15 days for an impermeability test. Beyond that, the 4 groups underwent traction (n=3) and bending (n=3) tests before (T0) and after the 15 days of aging in fresh water (T1). After the aging process, the coated groups showed a non-significant increase in weight (<1%), which stabilized with time. The control group showed a significant increase (>7%), with an increasing pattern. Mechanical properties of specimens decreased when aged, but the Epoxy Resin coating group showed best results overall. It can be concluded that the 3 different types of coats can guarantee watertight after 15 days in fresh water, whoever the Epoxy Resin coating showed better mechanical properties in the long-term.
