Resumo

This paper aims to answer the following question: Where are the black men exercising fatherhood in children's literature? From this point at issue, I propose a methodological path based on a bibliographic review in the fields of Sociology and Historiography, using as reference, authors who, from a racial perspective (ALMEIDA, 2018; GONZALEZ 1984; MUNANGA, 2004; NASCIMENTO; 1984; NASCIMENTO, 2002), seek to discuss the impacts that slavery caused in the representation of black people in Brazil and what effect this representation generated in the construction of the image of black men for themselves and the Brazilian society (SOUZA, 2009). Thus, throughout the research, we will discuss topics that will allow us to think about: the construction and idea of race in a sociological sense (GUIMARÃES, 2003), the challenges of writing black man protagonists in literature in a culture of objectification of black bodies (KILOMBA, 2019; PROENÇA FILHO, 2004), the concepts in construction regarding an Afro-Brazilian or Black-Brazilian literature (CUTI, 2010; DUARTE, 2010; EVARISTO, 2009), the field of children's literature as a space for literary theoretical discussion (HUNT, 2010; LAJOLO; ZILBERMAN, 2007; YUSTE FRÍAS, 2014), the issues that associate the emergence and nationalization of children's literature with depreciation in the representation of black characters (ZILBERMAN, 1985), the need for affectivity around children's literature with black characters as a concept (DEBUS, 2010; HOOKS, 2021; NASCIMENTO; SILVA, 2020; PEREIRA, 2017; ROSA, 2021), thinking about masculinities and black masculinities as a theoretical field (CONNELL, 1995, KIMMEL, 1998, HOOKS, 2019; FANON, 2008; PINHO, 2019; RESTIER, 2017; RIBEIRO; FAUSTINO, 2017; ROSA, 2006, SOUZA, 2009, 2020) and fatherhood and issues involving black men within this category (PEREIRA; SANTOS; SILVA, 2019). For the research, 9 publishers that I mention here as black or Afro-Brazilian publishers and that have children's books in their online catalogs were selected. They are: Ciclo Contínuo, Kitembo, Quilombhoje, Nandyala, Malê, Mazza, Ogum's Toques Negros, Oriki, and Pallas Editora. This way, a survey is carried out from a mapping/analysis of some works of children's literature found in the online catalogs of black or afro-brazilian publishers between the years 2000 and 2021, observing where the paternity of black men appears centrally, and beyond this issue, also paying attention to other possible models of relationship between black men and black children that are present in these narratives, reflecting on how they are presented in each context and what ideas they develop around the idea of paternity. In the online catalogs of these publishers, out of 209 published works, only 7 bring the centrality of black men as fathers, or as grandfathers or uncles, being central and presenting a possible masculinity reference for black boys. This small amount of published works reveals how much this theme needs to be discussed, given the complexity and multiplicity of the existence of black men in Brazilian society.
