Resumo

The present work aims to evaluate the possible advantages of the GMAW-RE (Gas Metal Arc Welding-Rotating Electrode) over the GMAW (Gas Metal Arc Welding) in weld cladding overlay with superaustenitic stainless steel (SASS). For this purpose, an analysis of the effects of parameters of the GMAW-RE process on weld overlay was evaluated, taking into account geometric aspects of the weld bead and the dilution control. The GMAW-RE is a variant of the GMAW process, which is characterized by a special mechanism that gives the welding torch a rotating movement of the wire electrode, where the rotation frequency, rotation diameter, and rotation sense can be adjusted. Weld cladding overlays were performed with a 6% Mo SASS consumable over carbon steel plates. The results have shown that the GMAW-RE process with higher frequencies or rotation diameters results in the reduction of the height and bead penetration in combination with better homogeneity, a small increase in width, and lower dilution levels. In this work, the 300 rpm and 500 rpm rotation frequencies in association with a 3mm rotation diameter have shown the best results, indicating that the GMAW-RE process can be an advantageous alternative.
