Resumo

Aiming to discuss the contributions of Modeling-Based Teaching to Biology Teaching, this study sought to identify the stages of Learning Progression expressed by 1st-year high school students during a didactic sequence carried out over a semester in a private school in the city of Rio de Janeiro. The sequence occurred in face-to-face meetings during theoretical and laboratory classes. The activities were carried out in groups of up to 6 students in a class of 32 individuals. Each activity had a specific script with questions and instructions that led the students through collective discussions, but recorded their answers individually. The written records in the scripts were subjected to content analysis, to which audio recordings of the discussions carried out collectively by the students were added. The knowledge products (models) constructed by the students were also analyzed. The results indicated that modeling favored the understanding of the nature of scientific knowledge and biological concepts, with active participation of the students, who expressed different levels of understanding about models and modeling. The study contributes to the field of models in science and biological education, highlighting the potential of modeling as a pedagogical strategy to promote meaningful learning and the development of critical thinking. In addition, it reinforces the importance of educational practices that value collective construction and individual recording, providing a more in-depth look at student progress.
