In this work, we analyze the accounts of young black students about their experiences participating in an anti-racist pedagogical project developed based on the application of law 10.639/03, which deals with the teaching of Afro-Brazilian history and culture in elementary school. We present a brief history of the black movement’s demand for a space in the school curriculum, demonstrating how this struggle advances from the political to the educational sphere. We investigate the possibilities of action that the school institution has over the community around it, as well as how disputes over socio-political projects manifest themselves and impact the curriculum, whether formal, lived or hidden. The objective of the research was to record (aware that, in recording, we also produce and rework) memories and reflect on the knowledge involved in carrying out a pedagogical project that aims to counter hegemonic Eurocentric thinking and place the narratives of black students about their stories at the center of the analysis. It became clear that this movement is guaranteed, legitimized, and supported by the public policy of promoting racial equality condensed in the law that requires the teaching of the history of black people as one of the crucial ways of building racial consciousness in a society with a historical trajectory that has tried to silence culture of African origin. The accounts were commented on using the method of discourse analysis, with the constant search for the connection between the narratives of the young people and the socially constituted discourse and put forward at this time of resurgence of conservative, neoliberal, and meritocratic positions. We conclude that yes, law 10.639/03, education, school and school subjects have a strong potential to provoke criticism, reflection and transformations in their immediate context and in the everyday power networks that extend beyond and are as effective as the great gears of power.en
