Resumo

The purpose of this dissertation is to analyze the representation of black women on the covers of Glamor magazine, in its national version, of the arrival of the title in Brazil, in April 2012, to December 2020. For this, we bring theoretical reflections on the (sub) presentation of black women in this publication, from discussions on racial and gender issues, proposed by black feminism (BORGES, 2012; CARRERA, 2020; CARNEIRO, 2011; COLLINS, 2017; GOMES, 2005, 2019; GONZALEZ, 2011; hooks, 2018; SANTOS, 2004; SANTOS, 2007; VIANA, 2010); and language in the theoretical-methodological perspective of Discourse Analysis (BORGES, 2012; CARRERA, 2020; CARNEIRO, 2011; COLLINS, 2017; GOMES, 2005, 2019; GONZALEZ, 2011; hooks, 2018; SANTOS, 2004; SANTOS, 2007; VIANA, 2010). In this context, Glamor magazine, with its contents focused on beauty, fashion, celebrities and lifestyle, brings themes that constitute models of power, from the economic and symbolic consumption of what is valued in aesthetic, based on social standards connected to the social class, race and gender. Therefore, this work seeks to have an intersectional view in relation to its research object, in order to analyze the verbal and non-verbal statements present in the analyzed covers of the publication. For this purpose, we deal objectively with the genre of discourse "magazine cover", and we identify and analyze the interdiscursive marks that constitute it. Besides, we understand that images also represent a crucial element in this enunciation space and, then, based on intericonicity, we analyze the aesthetic, compositional and communicative choices of the selected covers. In this way, we were able to conclude that whiteness continues to dictate the directions and decisions that substantiate the Glamour magazine, and we question whether the presence of black people, especially, on the covers, does not represent a mere tokenization of these bodies, that would function as commodities to serve the market interests of a neoliberal order.
