TURISMO GASTRONÔMICO, FEIRAS AGROECOLÓGICAS E FESTIVAIS REGIONAIS: UM OLHAR PARA A BAIXADA FLUMINENSE

Abstract

This dissertation analyzes the connections between food tourism, agroecological fairs and food festivals in the Baixada Fluminense region, specifically in the municipality of Nova Iguaçu, based on three papers. The first paper presents the origins and evolution of the academic debate on food tourism through an empirical, quantitative, and exploratory bibliometric study covering the period up to 2024. The results show that publications on the topic began to appear in 2003, with significant growth in 2020 and continued growth in the following years. The second paper analyzes the relationship between food tourism and two agroecological fairs in Nova Iguaçu, while the third paper explores the relationship between food tourism and two food festivals that have been held in the municipality since the 2000s; both are empirical, qualitative studies with an exploratory purpose. Direct observations made during field visits were supplemented by 36 in-depth interviews with farmers, cooperatives, and rural support agencies, as well as residents and residents’ associations, researchers, and government officials at the state and municipal levels. The study analyzed two weekly farmers’ fairs in Nova Iguaçu that offer organic products from family farms, benefiting farmers and consumers alike thanks to the absence of middlemen. It also analyzed two annual food festivals that help increase the market for agroecological products produced in the municipality and raise the profile of family farming, The results show that farmers’ fairs and food festivals complement each other, since while farmers’ fairs support the daily economic lives of farmers and their families, food festivals promote and reinforce the cultural dimension of local agricultural production. More than just economic exchange, these events foster social interaction and learning that help preserve agricultural and culinary traditions and further strengthen cultural memory and regional identity. Although the challenges related to access and transportation infrastructure - which are key to the success of these fairs and festivals - point to the need for greater support from the municipal government, the study highlighted the strength of Nova Iguaçu’s rural communities, which produce healthy foods and seek to preserve their cultural and culinary traditions through these events.

Esta dissertação analisa as conexões entre turismo gastronômico, feiras agroecológicas e festas gastronômicas na Baixada Fluminense, mais especificamente no municipio de Nova Iguaçu, por meio de três artigos científicos. O primeiro artigo apresenta a origem e evolução do debate acadêmico sobre turismo gastronômico por intermédio de uma pesquisa empírica, quantitativa e exploratória de caráter bibliométrico até o ano de 2024. Os resultados mostram que as publicações sobre o tema surgiram a partir de 2003, com crescimento expressivo em 2020 e contínuo nos anos seguintes. O segundo artigo analisa as relações entre turismo gastronômico e duas feiras agroecológicas em Nova Iguaçu, enquanto o terceiro artigo explora as relações entre turismo gastronômico e duas festas gastronômicas que ocorrem desde os anos 2000 no municipio, ambas pesquisas empíricas e qualitativas com finalidade exploratória. A observaçao direta nas visitas de campo foram complementadas por 36 entrevistas em profunidade com agricultores, cooperativas e órgãos de apoio rural, moradores e associações de moradores, além de pesquisadores e representantes do poder público no estado e no municipio. Foram analisadas duas feiras semanais que oferecem produtos orgânicos da agricultura familiar em Nova Iguaçu, beneficiando produtores rurais e consumidores graças à ausência de intermediários. Foram também analisadas duas festas gastronômicas anuais que contribuem para aumentar o escoamento dos produtos agroecológicos produzidos no municipio e para ampliar a visibilidade da agricultura familiar, Os resultados mostram que as feiras e festas se complementam, pois enquanto as primeiras sustentam o cotidiano econômico dos agricultores e suas famílias, as festas divulgam e reforçam a dimensão cultural da produção agrícola local. Mais do que espaços de troca econômica, esses eventos são espaços de sociabilidade e aprendizagem que contribuem para preservar as tradições agrícolas e culinárias e ainda reforçar a memória cultural e a identidade territorial. Embora os desafios de infraestrutura de acesso e transporte para o sucesso das feiras e festas indiquem a necessidade de maior suporte do poder público municipal, a pesquisa mostrou a força das comunidades rurais de Nova Iguaçu que produzem alimentos saudáveis e buscam preserver suas tradições culturais e alimentares por meio desses eventos.
