The objective of this study is to analyze black representation in cinema, highlighting the horror genre. It follows the evolution of the figure of the black character in audiovisual media, starting in 1915, the year in which one of the important films for the discussion was created. With this, we will discuss racism reproduced on screen, with theoretical support from Bakhtin (2016). In order to carry out this analysis, it will be necessary, first of all, to expand the research into language and its relationship with cinema. We will then analyze the horror genre and its origins, with a focus on gothic literature on the screen. Finally, we will critically read the films analyzed, namely The Birth of a Nation (1915), Night of the Living Dead (1986) and Get Out (2017), giving importance to their periods of origin, based on research by Coleman (2019). We will also consider the importance of the change in characters on screen over the years. We will seek to cover the discussion regarding the importance of research in the field of horror, and how the films analyzed have been influenced by racism in the decades studied until today, in which black people are seen as Subjects, according to the perspective of Kilomba (2019). The approach adopted focuses on the comparison and evolution of films and characters through their subjectivities and their relationship with the time in which they were made. As a result, we identified the tradition of erasure of black people in the field of horror in the cinematographic and literary genres researched.en
