Resumo

This dissertation investigates the craft of the Paneleiras of Goiabeiras Velha, recognized as an element of Brazil's intangible cultural heritage, through the articulation of visual culture, interculturality, and Science Education. The study is guided by the following research question: how can this craft constitute an epistemological bridge between popular knowledge and Science Education within an intercultural educational perspective? It is grounded on the premise that traditional knowledge systems represent legitimate epistemologies which, although often marginalized, expand educational possibilities by bringing science closer to local territories. Adopting a qualitative and documentary approach, the research analyzes a corpus of historical and contemporary photographs, drawing on visual semiotics to interpret meanings at iconic, indexical, and symbolic levels. The findings demonstrate that the reading of images reveals fundamental physico-chemical processes involved in the craft, such as lixiviation, oxidation, and thermodynamic dynamics, highlighting that the work of the Paneleiras constitutes an ancestral technology marked by technical rigor and cultural resistance. It is concluded that photography operates as a device of intercultural mediation, enabling technical gestures to be recognized as sites of knowledge production and evidencing that the craft can function as an epistemological bridge between popular knowledge and Science Education. By making visible the processes, techniques, and rationalities embedded in traditional practices, the imagetic analysis contributes to the formation of ways of seeing and interpreting the world, thereby strengthening a more plural, sensitive, and territorially grounded approach to Science Education in the Brazilian context.
